Florida Gators Former Head Coach Dan Mullen Announces His Return to Gators As…

Former head football coach Dan Mullen of the University of Florida claims that he recommended someone else to employ as his successor, and that someone wasn’t Billy Napier, the current coach. Mullen proposed that Florida target Lane Kiffin, the coach of Ole Miss.

“What’s really funny, you know? When I got let go at Florida a couple years ago, they asked me and I said, ‘Hey, I’d go hire Lane Kiffin right now,” Mullen told The Zach Gelb Show. “I said, ‘[If] you’re going to get rid of me, I’d go hire Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss right now.'”

“He kind of has that…a little bit of that…you know at Florida, they love points.” “He will carry on with the offensive to score runs. The program is in fantastic shape offensively since he is bringing in quarterback Anthony Richardson, a top five draft pick. He would have been a perfect match from the start because there were some talented receivers committed and on the roster.

If Napier is let go at Florida, Kiffin has been an early name floated as a potential replacement for him in Gainesville. However, Mullen thinks Kiffin will be much more difficult to pry away from Ole Miss now after the success that he’s had at the school.

Ole Miss is now, you know, in the running for the playoffs, thanks to him. Therefore, I’m not sure if he would find that interesting or not. In the coaching profession, you never know why someone might be choosing a particular course of action.” “They’re gonna have their personal or whatever reason to do it, but I think a couple years ago he probably would have taken the job if it were offered to him.”

It remains to be seen if (or when) Napier will be fired following a dismal two plus year start to his Gators career. However, Mullen would undoubtedly approve of that hire at Kiffin’s previous firm if he were on the board.
