Skins’ Icon Back in Burgundy: Darrell Green Returns as Commanders’ Defensive Coordinator

Washington Commanders Nation, legendary cornerback Darrell Green has returned to the franchise as its new defensive coordinator. Green, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and one of the most iconic players in Washington history, brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his new role.

Green spent 20 seasons (1983-2002) with the Washington Redskins, earning seven Pro Bowl selections, six All-Pro nods, and helping the team win three Super Bowls. His remarkable career was capped off with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

After retiring as a player, Green transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Redskins (2004-2005) and later as a cornerbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills (2006-2007). He also worked in the NFL’s player development department.

Green’s reunion with the Commanders marks a triumphant return to the franchise he once called home. “I’m thrilled to be back in Washington, where my heart is,” Green stated. “I’m eager to contribute to the team’s success and help shape the next generation of defensive players.”

The Commanders’ defense ranked 24th in total yards allowed last season. Green’s task is to revitalize the unit, leveraging his expertise to improve the secondary and bolster the pass rush. Expect significant schematic changes and an influx of young talent.

Current Commanders players, including safety Kam Curl and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, have expressed excitement about playing under Green’s guidance. “Learning from a legend like Coach Green is an incredible opportunity,” Curl said.

Commanders General Manager Martin Mayhew praised Green’s hiring, citing his “unparalleled knowledge, passion, and commitment to excellence.” Mayhew emphasized Green’s ability to develop players and instill a winning culture.
